There is nothing like a Hawaiian Luau! In the old days luaus were held
to celebrate the arrival of a new baby, a Hawaiian wedding, the coming
of royalty or the gift of a bountiful crop. Luaus were held to not only
celebrate but to offer thanks to the Gods that allowed that event to occur.
They lasted for many days. There was much to drink, much to eat and a
lot of dancing and game playing. There was a time of year when the festivities
went on for months. This was makahiki. No war or work took place during
this time. Everyone offered thanks to the Gods.
Today,
luaus are still held by the Hawaiian people. Mostly today they are held
to celebrate birthdays, retirements, graduations and weddings. These are
never small gatherings. Hawaiian people have the best luau and tropical
drink recipes. There is always a long guest list. A gathering of 500 people
