| For
a genuine hands-on experience, glimpse the life and traditions of
the ancient Hawaiians through an interactive day tour to the working
taro fields of Hana and Kahakuloa. The taro root is central to Hawai'i's
origins and culture, providing the staple for the first Polynesian
settlers, and acting as central element in island cooking ever since.
Pound taro in the traditional poi dish and lunch imu (underground
oven) style in the old Hawaiian way.
Our knowledgeable local guides lead
you on a journey that begins 1700 years ago with the arrival of
the first Polynesians.
Explore with us Maui's ancient past: learn of the
great Polynesian migration, the importance of the canoe, Hawaiian
religious traditions, and the legends of powerful kings. Listen
to the stories handed down through the generations. Visit one of
Maui's most sacred sites, Moku'ula, home and final resting place
of Hawai'i's royalty.
We move swiftly through time to the beginnings of
western contact, through the missionary, whaling and plantation
periods. Over 20 sites are visited, including important archeological
areas and monuments left by both the Hawaiians, and by the settlers
who came to the island over the course of Maui's colorful history.
The walking tour ends at the former surfing grounds
of Hawaiian high chiefs, on the beach at 505 Front Street Shops
and Restaurants. Maui Nei is a cultural tourism company in partnership
with the Friends of Moku'ula
at Lahaina.
